The Great Expectations: Deciding Your Post High School Life

by Jasmine Aguilar

By: Jasmine Aguilar

Like all great things in life, high school must end. Whether you’ve had a good or not so good experience, high school has an end date. From the early ages of education, we are raised and encouraged to become functioning members of society. As time progresses the roads that we follow become more distinct. Some people start at an early age prep for college: their parents sign them up for sports, summer camps, volunteer experiences, and private or boarding schools. This amount of preparation makes them more likely to think college bound, even picking the universities they want to attend at a young age. Others don’t have the same opportunities and are not “groomed” for the college life. But with guidance of counselors and teachers they can get nudged in the right direction, allowing them to set goals for what universities they want. While the amount of support in recent years for college is expediential it’s important to remember that there are other paths one can follow. Perhaps one wishes to join the military and serve for their country; with accessibility to the ASVAB, students are encouraged and shown said path for the noble career of the military. But what’s important to remember is that college and the military aren’t meant for everyone and that’s perfectly okay. What you do is ultimately up to you, seeking your happiness and health and stability should be your main priorities. There are many expectations upon us, but that doesn’t make them great.
