Summer Activities

by Jasmine Embrick

How do you plan on spending the Summer? Traveling? Hosting family gatherings? Sitting on the couch, home alone with nothing to do? Here are 10 tips and suggestions for fun activities to try while school’s out:

Learn a new skill. Is there nothing new going on at home, and you have nothing to do? Try playing an instrument, or drawing realistic portraits of ducks! Maybe you could sign up for self-defense classes, or use YouTube to learn some cool new moves.

Visit local cafes. There are plenty of cool, interesting cafes and restaurants to visit in Killeen. Visit a couple, and you might find a new favorite hangout!

Go to a waterpark. The heat in Texas can be rather intense, and what’s a better way to cool off than to jump into a sparkling pool? Just don’t forget your sunscreen, or there could be some serious repercussions.

Have a summer cleanout. You may have heard of spring cleaning, but the summer brings three whole months of endless opportunities. Rearrange your room, redecorate, reinvent yourself! If your room is always messy and you have trouble with motivation, make a checklist of tasks and pick one or two to complete each day. Start with picking up stray laundry, or color coding your closet.

Collect trash at your local community park. Earth Day may have been in April, but it’s never too late to make the world a better and cleaner place. Make it a party, and set a prize! Whoever collects the most gets the biggest slice of that special family recipe banana bread.

Make plans with friends. Bored out of your mind? Call a couple friends and see what they want to do! See a movie, have a picnic, or play some good old-fashioned board games.

Arts and crafts. It’s always fun to try origami! Spice up that old paper airplane, and see it do tricks in the air. Color a picture, or paint a masterpiece. When drawing, it’s always good to remember that art is subjective, and to always be optimistic.

Write a book. Creativity can come out in different ways, and you can put it to good use. For those of you that don’t particularly like reading, perhaps writing is more your style? Sometimes all it takes is your favorite subject and a pencil.

Get ahead of your studies. Whether you’re going to college or another year of high school, going over everything you’ve learned can’t hurt. Get ahead of the game and impress your teachers and friends!

Have a barbeque. Invite all your neighbors and friends to a fun party with good food. Make it a potluck even, and enjoy getting to know everyone better.

Perhaps one of these ideas will inspire you to take advantage of the time you have off from school!
