Social media is a huge part of the world today. It is capable of connecting people who are thousands of miles away from each other, but it can also tear people apart who are right next to each other. Social media has somewhat always been a part of society. Originally, in the form of letters, social media evolved, and around the 1950’s is when the use of online social media began to skyrocket. The first recognizable social media website was Six Degrees, which allowed people to create a profile and make friends.

When people were asked what their opinion on social media was, their answers were actually consistent for the most part. Teens often think that an adult’s view on social media would be outdated or a very poor, but that’s not the case. We asked multiple people regarding their opinions on social media, and we received diverse and methodical responses.

“It’s a hard one, to me it’s a double-edged sword. It’s on one hand good on the other hand bad.” said Ethan Parker, a sophomore. He was then asked how it was good and how it was bad, “There are people who connect from millions of miles away, who can share stories and connect. Then there are people who take advantage of the internet and we know it as cyberbullying. In that case, it ruins people’s lives.”

When asked how social media can be improved, and his response was, “That’s another hard one, because there’s always someone who is not happy. With social media you can improve a lot of things like the service, but there’s always going to be a group that disagrees with the changes.”

We also asked Zeraie, a junior, about her opinion on social media, and her response was, “To me social media is not that big of a deal because I’m never on social media all day long, I rarely post, I’m really only on there when other people post.”

When asked if social media is good or bad, her response was, “It’s negative and positive. The positives are that it gives teens a platform to be noticed and then they also have family members who get to see them often even when they’re not around; then, you have your friends that you could talk to. The negatives are that it is a way for others to cyberbully people. You also have a lot of people that post negative things, and then you have people who catfish.”

When Ms Garcia, a teacher at Ellison High School, was asked on her opinions on social media, she gave a very positive view, “I think it’s really informative when use correctly and keeps people connected in a way that was not possible before. Without social media, I think a lot of people would be less informed and become disconnected.”

Social media is an enormous part of modern society, without it, the world would be completely different. Would the world be better? Worse? How would the world be different?
