Effects of Technology to the Human Brain

By: Tatiana Brown

In this day and age of advanced technology, it is not surprising that over 2.1 billion people own a smartphone. Our cellar devices have become a big part of our lives; however, what most of us do not realize is that our devices are not only making our lives more convenient; it's also changing our brains and way of thinking.

The human brain is constantly trying to come up with solutions for everyday problems; with constant use of a smartphone, our cerebrum relaxes, knowing that our problems can be solved with just a tap of the search button. As a result, we tend to be perplexed when we are confronted with problems that require critical thinking.

Smartphones change how we perceive each other. Now that we have technology, our voice can always be heard. We often feel that it is a necessity to share our feelings to the world through social media. Moreover, since others have the ability to know our thoughts and feelings instantaneously, we often judge based on what is read. We immediately take what was read, and make assumptions on the type of individual they are. This makes it harder for us to read facial expressions in the real world if not already obvious.

The issue with technology, specifically smartphones, is not that we let it change our lives, it is that we let it change our thoughts.
